Isle of Avalon: Familiar

Name: Quis Platt
Species: Platypunk
Special features: The typical platypunks are shown to either have deep purple or silver mohawks, depending on the art. Hendrik's familiar is of the silver variety, with a silver mohawk and tip to its puffy tail.
Abilities: Almost all monsters in Erdrea (and Dragon Quest as a series) display the ability to talk -- many able to communicate with humans, and some only able to communicate with other monsters.

Other: Amusingly, despite his name, he is not a splatypunk.

Primary Magic
  • Healing Magic: Heal non-mortal wounds, cure natural illnesses (non-magical), protective magic, physical enhancement magic (temporary increased strength, etc.) Cannot make anyone invulnerable or immortal. Works on both animals and, to a small extent, plants.

Secondary Magic
  • Green Magic: Rapid growth of plant and fungi, control of plant movement, stimulate and magically aerosolize plant poisons and antidotes, grow plants in any organic environment including living beings (use with caution; may be fatal to host-- must touch host to “seed” them, cannot do remotely), hanahaki curses. Can enhance certain components of plants, including flavor and spice levels even after cooking. Plant empathy (sense the wellbeing and conditions of plants).

IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Hendrik
Canon: Dragon Quest XI
Canon Point: Act II, before meeting the Luminary
Background: Hendrik at Dragon Quest wiki

Suitability: Though it would likely take some time to deal with the lingering stress of protecting survivors after a worldwide catastrophe, Hendrik is a man who has trouble turning away from those who need help. He currently harbors a wariness that is not usual for him, having recently been betrayed by those he considered absolutely trustworthy, but he still works well with others and is willing to collaborate towards bigger goals if he understands (and agrees with) what is being accomplished.

He is a seasoned fighter and trained knight, having spent approximately 30 of his 36 years training, studying, or putting into practice his skills as a knight and eventual general. Even though he has spent a good number of years as a leader of men, he is also humble as a follower, willing to let a teenage boy lead on when it becomes apparent he is destined to fight the darkness overwhelming the world. He does not seek out conflict but can be very stubborn when he believes he is in the right, chasing down the one he has been tricked into believing is the Darkspawn, the harbinger of the dark one who will bring ruin to the world.

Powers:
Weapon Prowess -- Hendrik is a practiced swordsman, having trained with swords ever since he was a child. As a young teenager, he started adjusting his style to favor strength to balance out youthful clumsiness and slowness, soon favoring two-handed greatswords that he can use with tremendous raw power. He is physically powerful enough to wield his greatswords with one hand, which he must do while combating on horseback. His weapon prowess extends to one-handed swords and axes, which he can wield while also bearing a shield on the other arm. Beyond blades, he is also a good shot with a hand crossbow, able to maintain a steady aim to strike a horse while chasing on horseback.

He has a number of weapon skills with in-game effects that can be read at length here. Here is a quick rundown of most of them; apologies for the length:
Greatsword Guard - A greatsword skill that increases his ability to block incoming damage.

Helichopter - Swings through a group of enemies with greatsword in hand, inflicting normal damage to entire group.

Cutting Edge - Strikes with greatsword for 2x damage, but cannot inflict critical hits.

Frost Fangs - Strikes a group with an ice-element greatsword attack, with the chance of freezing them in their tracks for a turn.

Unbridled Blade - Empowers his greatsword to turn it into a blade of light capable of dealing 3x normal damage to an enemy, but cannot produce critical hits.

Flame Slash - Sets his one-handed sword ablaze to strike an enemy for 1.2x fire damage.

Sword Stance - Similar to Greatsword Guard, increases his ability to block incoming damage while bearing a one-handed sword.

Dragon Slash / Metal Slash - Sword skills that strike specific enemy types for more damage. Doesn't seem applicable in Abraxas, from what I can tell.

Miracle Slash - Harnesses his magical mending while using a one-handed sword, allowing him to strike an enemy while also healing himself a little.

Helm Splitter - An axe attack that has a 50% chance to halve an enemy's defense; strikes with 1.2x damage but has a lower chance for a critical hit.

Parallax - An axe attack that strikes with 3x damage and 25% chance of inflicting paralysis.

Hatchet Man - 50% chance of a guaranteed critical hit, but will miss if unsuccessful.

Scrap Mettle - A stronger version of Helm Splitter, hitting with 1.5x damage and 50% chance of lowering an enemy's defense by 75%.

Axes of Evil - A whirling axe attack that can hit a group of enemies for 2.2x damage.

He has several shield skills that amount to being able to block incoming enemy attacks, both physical and magical, and deflecting some damage back at the enemy. He also has skills that enhance his ability to defend his allies, such as Forbearance, which allows him to take all the incoming attacks meant for his allies for a short while (one battle turn in the game).

Magic -- Hendrik is dependable in the magical mending department, having naturally learned mid-range single-target healing magic (Midheal, Moreheal) and defensive magic that increases protection against both physical and magical attacks (Buff, Kabuff, Magic Barrier). He has the potential to learn a spell much later on in the game that will drain all his life and magic power to revive his allies (Kerplunk), but that is a long time from his current canon point (and not exactly a good fit for the game, to boot).

Blacksmithing -- A somewhat more mundane skill when compared to his battle and magic skills, blacksmithing is something that Hendrik studied as an apprentice knight and early on as a knight. By his own admission, he is not very experienced beyond knowing the basics around the forge, but he can identify ore and forge weapons if push comes to shove.

Horsemanship -- As a Heliodorian general who mainly patrols by land, Hendrik spends a good amount of time on horseback. He developed a strong bond with his warhorse, Obsidian, by meeting his will and stubbornness with his own; it is clear that other knights cannot earn the horse's respect the way Hendrik has. With an experienced horse or one with which he has a strong bond, Hendrik would be able to ride them with confidence and even control them under many stressful combat circumstances. He is able to riding Obsidian down a sloping mountainside in pursuit of the Darkspawn and also drive him into galloping leaps to clear flights of stone steps. He has also ridden with and without full armor.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
The course of Hendrik's life was decided very early on, when he was approximately six years old. His birth country, Zwaardsrust, was destroyed overnight by a massive monster attack, and he lost his family and friends as a result. He survived by his father's forethought, hidden away in the dark of the church's basement and told not to come out until daybreak. Emphasizing the responsibilities of the knights to their lord and country, Hendrik's father impressed upon Hendrik the duty to survive by acting as his lord and ordering him not to open the door.

While Hendrik mourned his family and cried and had nightmares as a result of that early trauma, he came away from the experience with a strong resolve to live and be worthy of the lives lost to keep him safe. This is best shown in his humble reactions to talk of his heroism and exploits, even as he speaks reverently of his birth country and the people who helped make him the man he is today. He knows he always has room to grow and does not forget those who have helped him along the way.

After surviving the destruction of Zwaardsrust, Hendrik was rescued by King Carnelian of Heliodor and sent along to live in Heliodor as a ward of the king. He entered training as an apprentice knight, where he would eventually meet his friend and rival, Jasper. Being taken in by King Carnelian instilled upon Hendrik a strong sense of gratitude towards the king and country for allowing him a second chance, and he says on multiple occasions that he lives to see the kingdom flourish and pay back its people with his service for the rest of his life.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
"A knight's word is his bond, his kingdom his master! He serves the weak untiringly, challenges the strong unflinchingly, and never retreats in the face of adversity!"

A strong presence in Hendrik's life is the Knight's Pledge, a code instilled upon those who aspire to become knights. The Knight's Pledge is explicitly practiced in Heliodor, Puerto Valor, and Gallopolis, and is likely also practiced with the knights of Sniflheim, Zwaardsrust, and Dundrasil, as all of the kingdoms would regularly treaty and collaborate prior to Zwaardsrust and Dundrasil's destruction.

Hendrik takes the Pledge seriously and lives by it implicitly; he believes strongly in safeguarding his adoptive kingdom and follows his king's orders unquestioningly. It's only through the act of being betrayed that he begins questioning and regretting his own actions, though even then he does not hesitate to continue protecting those in need of protection and fighting against evil forces with no end in sight -- until the fated hero, the Luminary, appears before him. While that has not yet happened at his current canon point, his dedication to fighting for those who rely on his protection remains unrelenting.

He also has a more personal oath that he made when he was twelve years old, physically represented by a golden shield pendant that he has worn around his neck for most of his life. He and Jasper were both given these golden shield pendants on the day they were introduced to the newborn Princess Jade, who would someday rule the kingdom in King Carnelian's stead. The oath pendants were to be their solemn promise to strive together to be seen as the two-headed eagle, the kingdom's national symbol, and support Princess Jade just as much as they would support King Carnelian. It was an oath made in gentler times and would ultimately lead to a lot of heartache for everyone involved.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Hendrik admires resolve and courage in others, among other traits; he can look at the actions of others and often find something to respect in them. One example is him admiring the courage of a child who investigates a monster at the risk of being whisked away by monsters himself, even as he finds fault in his recklessness. He also admires talent and skill in areas that he is lacking; in Jasper, he admires his resourcefulness and ability to plan ahead for different scnearios -- something Hendrik admits is not a strength of his.

Truly, as long as he does not judge a person to be at fault or their actions to be wrong, Hendrik can likely find something that he respects in them.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Hendrik has only recently had to face a great flaw in his character -- namely, the way that he blindly followed King Carnelian's orders with the thought that what he was doing was for the good of the world. He has never been put in the position to question the character of two people he greatly respected the majority of his life -- King Carnelian and his childhood friend, Jasper -- and being so thoroughly fooled by a scheme that lasted years has caused him to rethink his behavior and how he can move on from there without feeling like a fraud and failure to the people who suffered as a result.

What is their sign, and why?
Hendrik's sign is Death. As a man dedicated to the prosperity of his adoptive kingdom, and later the general breadth of the world, he works to maintain peace on a daily basis and expects neither gratitude or reward for his work. Though he can be mired in regrets of the past, he shakes himself out of those feelings quickly to embrace what he can do today and what can happen tomorrow.

Going a bit deeper with this, Hendrik has a strong affinity and resemblance to an ancient hero of the past, the Warrior-King Drustan who stood with the Luminary Erdwin and would go on to establish Hendrik's home country, the Kingdom of Zwaardsrust. It is strongly hinted that Hendrik has inherited the will of Drustan and it is no mistake that he becomes the protector and ally of the current Luminary, who inherited the will of the previous Luminary. Drustan, in a bid to ready the future Luminary and his allies for battle against the Dark One, left his living memory deep underground to await the day his guidance was needed. If Hendrik has inherited even a fraction of that dedication and patience, that would speak towards being resolved to fight for a hopeful future that he may never see.
